Two girlfriends(Hall and Johannsen) on a summer holiday in Spain become enamored with the
same painter (Bardem), unaware that his ex-wife (Cruz), with whom he has a tempestuous
relationship, is about to re-enter the picture. (IMDB)
For some reason I was so inclined to see this movie I went it alone after a bender the night prior. I showed at 7:10 for the 7pm showing at BAM Rose Cinemas. I was subjected to viewing this movie from the 1st row all the way to the right (where the delete button is on your keyboard). It was like trying to read someone else's newspaper on the train....anywho...not-so-surprised to say the movie was a "tour de force" or is it "triumph"? Either way the audience and I were thoroughly entertained for all 1 hour and 36 minutes of what some are saying is Woody Allen's return to form after two mediocre showings in recent years. Javier Bardem plays an updated Don Juan type character to the 'T'. The stunning Penelope Cruz shined in a somewhat atypical role for her as the fiery Castillan ex-wife. Scarlett Johannsen was finally more than tolerable playing the free swinging American who is always wanting something more blah with her friend the boring Vicky Hall. One of the funniest characters in this movie is Vicky Hall's on screen husband Doug. Good date movie or alone if your feeling doubtful or sad, a must see for most though.
Apparently some guy named Scott Tobias of the Onion AV club wrote this vague-ish gem of a review, "it was a witty and ambiguous movie that's simultaneously intoxicating and suffused with sadness and doubt". So highfalutin.
